Unleashing the Power of Composite Manufacturing Solutions

In This Article

Here at Motion Drives and Control, we know it is important to stay one step ahead. Composite manufacturing offers a new approach to reaching a high standard in an industry that is always evolving. This blog will explain the potential and look into compositing manufacturing so you can better understand its capabilities.

What is Composite Manufacturing?

Composite materials have changed the manufacturing world for the better, allowing for a mix of strength, versatility and lightweight properties that other more traditional materials can not offer. Composite materials have already spread to a lot of sectors from aerospace to automotive and everything in between providing high-quality results.

So, how does it work?

Composite materials are made by combining multiple materials with certain chemical or physical attributes which then makes a product that is far more efficient. Examples of this are materials such as Fiberglass, Carbon fibre and aramid, which when merged with an epoxy resin, create a stronger and lighter solution that is much less vulnerable to corrosion and material fatigue.

Benefits of Composite Manufacturing

These are the benefits:

  • Weight reduction: With material being more lightweight this means that transportation of the material will be cheaper due to better fuel efficiency. It also makes for easier labouring as you will be working with a lighter material.
  • Corrosion resistance: Composite materials have better durability and resistance to corrosion resulting in a longer lifespan than most materials and will stand up to harsh environments.
  • Long-term money saver: While composite materials are on the more expensive side to create/acquire they do offer long-term benefits that in the long run will save you a lot of money, this is because they require less maintenance and have a longer lifespan.
  • Stronger and longer-lasting materials: Due to these types of materials being stronger and more durable, they can replace older and more traditional materials to ensure longer-lasting structures.
  • Flexible materials: As composite materials are more malleable they are much easier to work with and incorporate into the design you want allowing for more intricate and creative designs.

Industries Embracing Composite Materials

Some industries are already using composite materials, here’s a few and how they are using them:

  • The Renewable Energy industry is always in need of efficiency in all areas including weight, strength and durability to name a few so composite materials are already playing a key part in providing this. From solar panels to wind turbines, these all need to be light, durable and long-lasting so why consider anything other than composite materials?
  • The Automotive industry highly benefits from the lightweight durability of composite materials. This helps vehicles increase fuel efficiency and overall agility bringing long-term costs down and performance up.
  • The Marine industry also soaks up composite material benefits. This industry needs lightweight materials that can stand the test of time, especially in water. The prevention of corrosion whilst also being lightweight and durable makes composite materials an excellent solution.

Maintaining Composite Materials

These materials offer a lot of benefits however this doesn't mean they don't need to be looked after. Like all materials, to prevent expensive replacements or damage to structures these materials need to be routinely checked, cleaned and, if necessary, repaired to make the composite material last as long as possible and work to maximum efficiency.
